How To Clean Your Dishwasher

I know, I know, this is a food blog.  I didn't forget. I swear, I'm not losing it (well only sort of).  I stumbled upon this great tip and I just had to share it with you.

You know that every now and then you open that dishwasher door and you are hit with some rancid smells.  I know whenever I use a lot of garlic in something that smell stays in my dishwasher...NOT ANYMORE.

I used to buy a buy a bottle of that dishwasher refresher cleaner for like $6.00 and that is only for a 1 time use. NOT ANYMORE.

By the way, those gross looking marks on the inside there have been driving me crazy and I've been too lazy to get in there and scrub.  I realized those marks are from putting my cookie sheets in there. They sort of rest on the side and the backside of the sheets are getting rusty. Gross I know but I don't use these ones for cookies, I put foil down and cook the kids nuggets on them.  Yes, frozen nuggets. Stop judging me, I'm about to give you an awesome tip.

Here's what you need:
  • 1-2 C vinegar
  • measuring cup or bowl that will fit on the top rack
  • 1/2 C baking soda
  1. Pour the vinegar into the cup/bowl and place on top rack.
  2. Run the dishwasher on the hottest cycle you have (a normal length cycle).
  3. After cycle ends it should be clean.  If you have some really old built up grime, you may need to give it a wipe but at the very least it should be loosened up enough that a quick swipe with a paper towel should do it.
  4. Remove the vinegar cup.  Sprinkle baking soda in the bottom of the dishwasher.
  5. Run another hot cycle.  You can make this one a "light" cycle.
  6. When you open it this time it should be all nice and fresh smelling!

You are welcome!

  3. I do this but I don't do a separate cycle. I add it to my dishes. My appliance guy suggested it. It works great!
